Opt-outs & Suppression

Abelo enforces automated compliance safeguards and real-time validation to ensure you never send promotional messages to contacts who have unsubscribed, revoked consent, or invoked privacy rights.

By maintaining channel-specific consent records, Abelo protects your brand reputation, maximizes delivery rates, and adheres to global privacy regulations (including GDPR and carrier policies).

1. Overview

Abelo's messaging compliance architecture separates communication into two distinct regulatory classes:

  • Promotional Messaging: Marketing broadcasts, discounts, product launches, and newsletters. Strictly requires active, verifiable recipient marketing consent.
  • Transactional & OTP Messaging: Order confirmations, shipping tracking updates, and one-time authentication PINs. Because these are service-critical messages requested directly by the recipient, they bypass promotional suppression lists.

Abelo manages marketing consent independently for each messaging channel:

Channel Consent Attribute Description
Viber viber_marketing_consent Recipient has explicitly opted in to receive promotional Viber Business Messages.
SMS sms_marketing_consent Recipient has explicitly opted in to receive promotional SMS messages.

In the Abelo dashboard (under Audience > Profiles and Audience > Lists), each profile's phone number displays real-time status icons:

  • Green Viber Icon: Profile has active consent to receive promotional Viber messages.
  • Gray Viber Icon: Profile has not consented (or has opted out) of Viber marketing.
  • Green SMS Icon: Profile has active consent to receive promotional SMS messages.
  • Gray SMS Icon: Profile has not consented (or has opted out) of SMS marketing.

Customer consent flags in Abelo are automatically populated and updated via:

  1. E-Commerce Checkout Opt-In: Synchronized in real time when customers check promotional consent boxes during Shopify or WooCommerce checkout.
  2. Onsite Lead Capture Widgets: Collected when visitors submit phone numbers via Abelo lead forms.
  3. CSV Spreadsheet Import: Declared via marketing consent columns during static list imports.
  4. Manual Profile Management: Configured directly by team members when creating or editing profiles.

3. Real-Time Send-Time Validation

When any campaign is launched or scheduled, Abelo executes a pre-flight compliance check immediately prior to message transmission:

  • Dynamic Suppression Override: Even if an opted-out contact exists in a static list uploaded weeks earlier, send-time validation suppresses them from promotional messages.
  • Zero Inadvertent Sends: Pre-flight validation eliminates the risk of human error when selecting broad lists or segments.
  • Cost Protection: Suppressed contacts are filtered out prior to delivery, ensuring your account balance is never charged for non-consenting recipients.

Team members with appropriate permissions can adjust customer consent or execute privacy requests directly:

  1. Navigate to Audience > Profiles and open the customer's profile.
  2. Click Edit Profile.
  3. Toggle the SMS Marketing Consent or Viber Marketing Consent switch as required.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Processing GDPR Right-to-Erasure Requests

When a customer submits a formal data deletion or Right-to-be-Forgotten request:

  1. Locate the customer profile under Audience > Profiles.
  2. Click View Details.
  3. Scroll to the Profile Deletion card and click Delete Profile.
  4. Confirm deletion in the prompt dialog.

Permanent Customer Deletion

Deleting a profile permanently removes all contact information, identifier links, and list associations from your organization.
